Welcome to Ms. McNell's Second Grade! Second Grade is a wonderful time in a child's development to learn, explore and become a caring and productive citizen.

READING:  Throughout the Fall, students will continue to build on their literacy foundation by working in small reading groups to increase decoding skills, vocabulary, fluency, expression and comprehension.

WRITING:  We have started to write our first personal narrative with a focus on satisfying the 6 + 1 traits of literacy.

MATH:  Our math studies will revolve around working with manipulatives to understand concepts including one-to-one correspondence, skip counting, addition, subtraction, place value and word problems.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  The social studies curriculum aids 2nd graders in their development out of egocentric thinking. The children move from a study of self to a focus on family and eventually community.

SCIENCE:  In science, we have started to study scientific method. We participated in our first experiment, where we grew sunflower seeds into seedlings and learned what plants need to grow and thrive.

RELIGION:  In the study of our Catholic faith, 2nd graders learn about Jesus the man. This month we have been participating in the study of the month of the Holy Rosary. The Catholic faith permiates all aspects of our learning!
